•The first “Pony Penning” day was held at Chincoteague Island, Virginia in 1924. At this event, feral ponies living on nearby Assateague Island are swum to the shore for their annual health checks and a foal auction raises money for their ongoing care.
•Surfer’s Riptide is a fan-favorite stallion on the island and was a “buyback” foal, meaning he was purchased and then immediately returned to remain a permanent member of the Assateague herd.
•A portion of proceeds will support the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and the Museum of Chincoteague, two organizations that continue to help keep the island herd happy and healthy
